Born in 1949, Chris Vine studied at the Regional College of Art, Bradford (1965 – 1970) looking at the work of Rene Magritte, Saul Steinberg, Anthony Earnshaw and the films of Luis Bunuel. After lecturing in art, (Carlisle and London) he became a free-lance artist in 1983.

His exhibitions include:

•  Dean Clough Galleries (Halifax)

•  Cleaveland Art Gallery – “Drawn to Humour”

•  Museum of Humour and Satire (Bulgaria)

•  Hourglass Gallery (Paris)

•  Zillah Bell Gallery (Thirsk) – “Digging for Ladders”

•  Chelsea Arts Club.

“Many of my paintings tend to paint themselves! Much of my work revolves around visual language. I use visual figures-of-speech (mixed metaphors, contradictions, palindromes and clashing clichés) to describe the real and imagined.

Usually I start with an idea and then translate it into an image, drawing from memory rather than observation. Hopefully the visual poetry and humour undermines function, common sense and expectation."
