Made in Garston

Ebony Andrews, (24) is a practising artist based in West Yorkshire. She was educated in Bradford before moving to Newcastle to pursue a Fine Arts degree at Northumbria University between 2002 and 2005. After graduation Andrews undertook a Fine Art Fellowship at the University whilst working on a commercial artist residency in association with the Arts Council North East. Ebony has exhibited widely throughout the North East including at The Workplace Gallery Gateshead, and at The Northern Gallery of Contemporary Art, Sunderland.

Through the traditional ‘crafts' of taxidermy and animal preservation, Andrews examines the full spectrum of ways in which man employs the use of animals, and the ethical and political dilemmas attendant upon them.

All the works in this category are compromised from salvaged animal parts. No animals have been intentionally killed or harmed in the production of this body of work.

All the specimens featured in this section were legitimately obtained in accordance with the regulations imposed by the department for environment, food & rural affairs (DEFRA). Appropriate licenses are held by the artist.

The artist examines why the public collectively entertain polarised attitudes towards other species. She subverts animal anatomies creating monuments that reveal our desire to both commodify and redraw animals to satisfy human ideals of beauty and the decorative. The result is a disturbing series of category confusions which are unstable and in constant flux.
